How it works
The AMP-EL ENERGY® Bulk Energy Storage system is an integrated energy storage unit that is reliable and more cost effective than any other energy storage unit currently available on the market today. The system is capable of storing energy from any renewable or non-renewable energy source such as Wind, Solar Thermal, Solar PhotoVoltaic, Hydro, Geothermal etc. reliably for peak-shaving and base-load power supply during its project life, which is well in excess of 3 to 5 times the life of conventional electro-chemical battery storage.
The system controller detects excess renewable energy (via CT clamps) and reroutes it to the hydro-pneumatic air compressor which charges a bank of compressed air cylinders. The excess heat during the compression cycle is vented to atmosphere. When the demand surpasses the renewable energy supply, the stored compressed air is then released and expanded through our Patented N-GEN® Turbine to generate the appropriate amount of electrical energy.

The main benefit of dual axis (outside the tropics) and single axis (inside the tropics), is that more energy (typically 35% for single axis and 43% for dual axis) can be created closer to the demand cycles and hence reducing the amount of energy storage required. The following is an example of a typical Tracking PV – Solar Thermal Electric system design for a daily load of 3,555 kWh.
If the 250kW of fixed PV were used to match the load, then approximately 1,273 kWh will be generated (Red line) and approximately 2,280 kWh will need to be generated through a solar thermal electric system or alternatively be produced by more PV Panels, stored in batteries or be supplied by the grid.

If, however, the 250 kW was placed on a dual axis tracker, then approximately 1,820 kWh would be generated and only 1,735 kWh would be required from a solar thermal electric system, or PV-Batteries or the Grid.
